John Mott brings more than twenty years of experience advising public officials, governmental entities, businesses, individuals, and private organizations on legal, legislative, regulatory, and public policy matters. Mr. Mott joined Nichols | Jackson in 2026 and represents the firm’s municipal clients in a wide range of matters including, municipal prosecution, labor and employment, open government, regulatory compliance, public information, elections, and general municipal law.

Mr. Mott regularly advises municipal officials and staff regarding governance, open meetings and public information requirements, personnel matters, regulatory compliance, and risk management issues affecting local governments.

Prior to joining Nichols | Jackson, Mr. Mott founded and managed a boutique commercial litigation practice, representing clients in district and county courts throughout Texas. His litigation background provides valuable experience in dispute resolution, risk assessment, and practical problem solving for municipal clients.

Mr. Mott has significant experience at the intersection of law, government, and public policy. Throughout his career, he has served in senior leadership positions involving legislative affairs, government relations, risk management, compliance, and organizational operations. This experience provides him with a practical understanding of the legal, administrative, and policy considerations that local governments and public officials encounter in serving their communities.

A native of McKinney, Texas, Mr. Mott earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Austin College and his Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law. While in law school, he served on the Board of Barristers and interned for a Justice on the Seventh Court of Appeals in Amarillo.
